ESEG College received, on Tuesday (08/11), Rana K. Gupta, Executive Director of the Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), for a lecture in the program of ESEG Tech Summit 2026. Held in Auditorium J3 on the Ana Rosa Campus, the meeting took place online and live, directly from Boston, in the United States, moderated by Professor Maurício Nakahodo, and brought students closer to one of the leading international references in technological entrepreneurship and technology transfer.
With the theme “From the Laboratory to the Market: Science, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation in Practice”, The lecture presented pathways to transform scientific research and discoveries into products, startups, and solutions capable of generating economic and social impact. This approach aligns with the work of the Deshpande Center, an MIT initiative dedicated to bridging the gap between academic research, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
With extensive experience as an entrepreneur, executive, and investor, Rana shared his knowledge on technological entrepreneurship, creating innovative companies, and developing businesses based on academic research.
Throughout the meeting, the speaker emphasized that entrepreneurship also means dealing with differing opinions and making decisions in the face of uncertainty. "You will hear conflicting advice, and it's up to you to decide. That's part of entrepreneurship," Rana stated.
Another point addressed was the importance of seeking different sources and perspectives before making decisions. The speaker also presented the role of... innovation catalysts, Professionals who work to help researchers and entrepreneurs negotiate intelligently, reduce risks, and make more informed decisions.
According to Rana, some professors even participate in MIT programs more than once, precisely because of the opportunity to broaden their perspective and experience real-world situations. The practical experience, she emphasized, allows participants to better understand the challenges involved in transforming an idea into a business.
During the lecture, he also shared stories of people who had crossed paths with him and subsequently decided to become entrepreneurs, showing how contact with different experiences can influence career choices and open new avenues.
For José Guilherme de Campos, coordinator of Administration and Economics at ESEG, the evening brought an important connection between knowledge, research, and the market. “The lecture was very important because it was given by a professor of entrepreneurship practice who works at one of the most prestigious institutions in the world, MIT. Professor Rana, with extensive experience as a CEO of companies and manager of Venture Capital Funds, discussed how the Deshpande Center operates to transform high-potential research into high-potential products and startups,” he stated.
The coordinator also highlighted the unique aspect of the MIT center in working directly with researchers and the importance of deeply understanding customer needs. “The biggest lesson from the lecture, which I also try to emphasize in my classes, is the importance of deeply understanding customers and truly creating a product or company that solves a real problem and makes a difference in people's lives. No matter how innovative and revolutionary the research is, if it doesn't make sense to the customer, you don't have a company or product.”
According to José Guilherme, this perception applies to different types of entrepreneurs: "It's interesting to note that this maxim holds true for both a Brazilian micro-entrepreneur and a highly qualified researcher with a doctorate from MIT.".
The possibility of following a live international lecture Interacting with an expert directly from Boston was also a highlight for the students.
For Mariana de Oliveira Pereira, the experience showed a new possibility of contact with professionals from other countries and brought valuable lessons for her professional journey. “I found this type of lecture very innovative, where we could have contact and talk with speakers from other countries who don't speak the same language. He gave us many tips on how to start a career in the market, and it was very good,” said the student.
Economics student Bernardo Cavalcante highlighted Rana's professional experience and the broad vision presented during the meeting. "The best part was learning about all the expertise and context he brings to entrepreneurship and business management, as well as the entire industry and market in general, and how to navigate innovations," he emphasized.
The lecture reinforced the proposal of ESEG Tech Summit 2026 to bring students closer to national and international experiences and to promote contact with different perspectives on technology, innovation, entrepreneurship and economic development.
By bringing the experience of an executive working at one of the world's leading teaching and research institutions into the academic environment, the meeting provided students with a closer look at the challenges faced by researchers, entrepreneurs, and leaders in the face of market transformations.
The ESEG Tech Summit 2026 celebrates the 20th anniversary of ESEG College and brings together leading national and international figures to discuss technology, artificial intelligence, business, innovation, and leadership.
