As part of the activities marking the beginning of the academic semester and the ESEG Tech Summit, ESEG College, part of the Etapa Group, hosted George A. Bermann, professor at Columbia Law School and founder of the Center for International Commercial and Investment Arbitration, on August 3rd.

The topic addressed by the international speaker was "How international commercial arbitration strengthens legal certainty in global economic relations.".

The event was conducted in English (with simultaneous translation) and in a hybrid format, with students present in the Institution's Main Hall while the speaker participated via real-time videoconference. Recognized worldwide for his academic and professional contributions in the areas of arbitration, international law, and transnational dispute resolution, George Bermann led discussions aimed at understanding the role of international commercial arbitration in promoting legal certainty and competitiveness in global business.

International Arbitration

Aimed at law students, the presentation included the participation of ESEG faculty members, such as the coordinator of the Law course, Professor Fernando Couto, and the tenured professor of Civil Law, Juliana Kairalla Garcia Viotti, who was responsible for mediating and interacting between the students and the speaker.

George spoke about the differences between countries in legal processes, as well as explaining the importance of commercial arbitration in the international arena, detailing processes, causes and... modus operandi. According to Professor Juliana, this was important because it broadens the students' knowledge on a topic already covered in the ESEG Law course.

George Bergmann's presence reinforces ESEG College's commitment to connecting our students with the international market and the needs of the national scene. "We had the opportunity to bring in a big name to speak to our students about what they will face in the future in international arbitration," concluded Juliana.
