Soft Skills: What are they and why are companies seeking them so much?

Have you ever heard the term "soft skills"?

In today's professional world, success is not limited to technical skills and specific knowledge of a field. This is where the famous "soft skills," so highly valued by companies, come in.

In this article you will discover what they are and their importance in the job market.

What are soft skills?

Soft skills are the behavioral and personal abilities a person possesses, related to how a professional interacts with others and with themselves in a variety of situations.

They involve skills such as communication, collaboration, leadership, problem-solving, adaptability, empathy, emotional intelligence, teamwork, among others.

Unlike "hard skills," which are specific abilities acquired through training and formal education, soft skills are more intrinsic characteristics, subjective abilities that are more difficult to measure and can be applied in different professional and even personal contexts.

The importance of soft skills

To better understand the importance of developing social skills and how crucial they can be for landing a good job, we've listed some reasons why they are so important.

1. Improved communication and collaboration

Having good communication skills is essential in any work environment. The ability to express ideas clearly and effectively, listen attentively, ask relevant questions, and provide constructive feedback are soft skills that contribute to effective collaboration among colleagues, improving productivity and the quality of teamwork.

2- Effective Leadership

Soft skills are fundamental to the development of effective leaders. Inspiring, motivating, and influencing others, as well as making assertive decisions, are important characteristics for those in leadership positions. Leadership based on soft skills promotes cooperation and engagement among team members, resulting in a more productive and positive work environment.

3- Problem solving and decision making

The ability to analyze complex situations, identify creative solutions, make data-driven decisions, and handle challenges efficiently are highly valued soft skills in companies. Problem-solving requires a combination of critical thinking, logical reasoning, and the ability to cope with adversity, allowing professionals to overcome obstacles effectively.

4- Adaptability and flexibility

In a constantly changing world, adaptability and flexibility are fundamental. The ability to adjust to new situations, handle unexpected changes, and learn quickly is highly valued by companies. Professionals who possess these skills find it easier to navigate dynamic work environments and are more likely to adapt to constantly evolving demands.

5 – Emotional intelligence and empathy

Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify, understand, and manage one's own emotions as well as those of others. Empathy, in turn, is the ability to put oneself in another's shoes, understanding their perspectives and emotional reactions. These soft skills are important for creating healthy and collaborative relationships, promoting a positive work environment.

Why have companies been seeking soft skills?

As you may have noticed, these are fundamental skills in today's professional world, as they complement technical skills and help professionals stand out.

According to the international recruitment and selection website CareerBuilder, 77% of companies believe that socio-emotional skills are just as important in day-to-day work as technical skills.

Among the 5 most sought-after soft skills by companies are:

  1. Ethical principles;
  2. Trust;
  3. Positive attitude;
  4. Motivation;
  5. Teamwork.

As companies increasingly value collaboration, leadership, adaptability, and emotional intelligence, investing in the development and improvement of these skills becomes essential for achieving professional success.

Therefore, it is important to seek opportunities to develop these skills throughout one's career, by attending lectures and workshops, proposing an individual development plan with the company manager, learning to prioritize teamwork, etc.

In Faculty ESEG, from the Etapa Group, Students are encouraged to develop soft skills from the beginning of their undergraduate studies, so that they are ready for the challenges of today's job market.
