Understanding emotional intelligence

The concept of emotional intelligence emerged in the 1990s and was popularized in 1995 by Daniel Goleman, a psychologist recognized by The Wall Street Journal as one of the most influential thinkers in the field of emotional intelligence.

According to Goleman, it is composed of five main components:

1. Emotional self-awareness

It involves the ability to recognize and understand one's own emotions. People with high emotional intelligence are aware of how they feel and why they feel that way.

2. Social awareness

This is the ability to perceive the emotions of others and understand what they are feeling. Empathy plays an important role in this aspect.

3. Controlling emotions

Having emotional intelligence means being able to regulate your emotions. This doesn't mean suppressing them, but rather dealing with them in a constructive way.

4. Self-motivation

People with emotional intelligence are able to motivate themselves and persevere even amidst the challenges that come their way. They have clear goals and the ability to stay focused on them.

5. Interpersonal skills

Once you are able to perceive the emotions of others, you can use this ability to establish healthy and effective relationships. This is crucial in all aspects of life.

Now that we understand what emotional intelligence is, we can explore how it can be a determining factor in academic development and its ability to contribute to teacher productivity, as well as to the cognitive development and emotions of students.

Here are some ways in which emotional intelligence can play a key role:

Stress management

We all know that the academic environment can be extremely stressful. Students often face tight deadlines, challenging exams, and a rather heavy workload.

Emotional intelligence enables students to recognize stress, understand how it affects their performance, and develop strategies to cope with it in a healthy way. This includes the ability to relax, practice emotional control, and seek support when needed.

Improved communication

Emotional intelligence is intrinsically linked to effective communication. Students with high emotional intelligence are better at expressing their ideas clearly and listening attentively to others.

This not only benefits their academic performance, but also prepares them for future interactions in the job market and in everyday life.

Conflict resolution

Conflicts can arise in any environment, including the classroom.

The power of emotional intelligence empowers students to resolve conflicts constructively by understanding the emotions involved in the situation and seeking mutually beneficial solutions. This creates a more harmonious and productive learning environment.

Improved concentration and focus

The ability to stay motivated or find stimulation, key components of emotional intelligence, are fundamental to maintaining focus on academic tasks.

Students with well-developed emotional intelligence have clear goals and the discipline to work towards achieving those goals, even when faced with challenges and obstacles.
