On August 28th, ESEG College, part of the Etapa Group, held the final activity of its special monthly lecture series, hosting Professor Virgílio Silva, Chair of Constitutional Law at USP, to discuss the inner workings of the Supreme Federal Court (STF). The opening was conducted by Fernando Couto, coordinator of the institution's Law course.
The guest explained to the morning students the importance of understanding how the country's highest court works, composed of eleven justices, including the president, vice-president, and other magistrates who, together, are responsible for decisions of great national impact. Although the decisions are collegial, Virgílio emphasized that there is an intense internal deliberation process, in which different individual perspectives meet until the final result is reached.
The professor also addressed the relationship between the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and other governmental bodies, highlighting the importance of the balance of power for the functioning of democracy.
Another highlight was the use of artificial intelligence in the court, an essential tool for handling the large volume of cases. Virgílio cited the Vítor and Vitória systems, used in case management, which contribute to optimizing analyses and speeding up decisions.
According to coordinator Fernando Couto, the lecture was a unique opportunity for reflection: “Given the topicality of the subject and all the ongoing discussions in the country, it is essential that our students can reflect on the functioning of the Supreme Court and its role in society.”.
With this meeting, the special August Lecture Series comes to a close, reinforcing its goal of bringing students closer to central and contemporary themes for academic and civic education.
