On Tuesday evening (March 19th), ESEG – Faculdade do Grupo Etapa hosted two representatives from B3 (Brazilian Stock Exchange) in the Leonardo Da Vinci Noble Hall, on the Paraíso Campus, to teach students some concepts about the vast universe of the financial market through the lecture “Demystifying Investments”.

The event hosted one of the various activities of Global Money Week 2024, promoted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and encouraged by the CVM (Securities and Exchange Commission of Brazil). The initiative aims to disseminate information about the stock market, investments, and financial education to young people over the course of a week.

Professor José Guilherme, coordinator of the Administration course, was responsible for opening the lecture and welcomed the speakers from B3: Bruna Marcelino, Educational Projects Consultant, and Leandro Loiola, Education Consultant.

To introduce the topic, Leandro showed an image of the "open outcry trading floor," from the time when buy and sell orders on the Stock Exchange were made in person until the 2000s, and which are currently made through an electronic system called PUMA (Unified Multi-Asset Platform), which simplifies the process and optimizes the time for buy and sell orders.

Shortly after, Loiola explained about false opportunities that appear (those that guarantee high returns with no risk) and warned the students not to fall for these pyramid schemes. “Always be suspicious of investments where your return will be double, you have no risk, and all this in a short time. It's a scam! We never fall for it, but there's always a friend who does,” said the speaker.

Full of interactive elements, the lecture also included a quiz about economic concepts such as gold, CDBs, REITs, agricultural products, and the dollar. The prize was a stock market card game, designed to expand knowledge about how market operations and movements work.

Student Gabriel Neri, from the Computer Engineering course, was one of those who benefited from the game. “I thought the B3 presentation was absolutely perfect, because I’ve always been an investor since I was very young. Currently, I work at a bank, but my dream is to work at the Stock Exchange,” said the student, excited about the Faculty's initiative.

According to Professor José Guilherme Campos, coordinator of the Administration course, the event managed to generate great interest among the students, resulting in the main hall being at maximum capacity. "Although Economics and Administration students have a closer connection to the topic due to the Financial Systems and Financial Products course in the first semester, Financial Education is an extremely relevant subject for everyone, which generated great interaction among all participants," he emphasized.
