Accompanied by their teachers, second and fourth semester students learned more about the history of the São Paulo Court.
Last Sunday, August 21st, law students from ESEG – Faculdade do Grupo Etapa – took a technical visit to the Museum of the Court of Justice of São Paulo and the Palace of Justice. Accompanied by professors Amanda Silva, Fernando Couto, and Luciana Jardim, the students were able to learn more about the history of the Court of Justice of São Paulo (TJSP), as well as personally explore some of the spaces.
Considered the court with the highest volume of cases in the world, the TJSP (Court of Justice of São Paulo) was established in the capital of São Paulo in 1874, when the country was still under the authority of Dom Pedro II, with the name "Court of Appeal of São Paulo and Paraná". It was only two years after the proclamation of the Republic, in 1891, that the then Court of Justice of the State of São Paulo was created, composed, at that time, of nine judges.
The Palace of Justice, however, was only inaugurated for the first time in 1933 (a second inauguration took place nine years later, in 1942, with the completion of the fifth floor). Designed by the architect Ramos de Azevedo, the building houses the Court and is considered a historical monument of architectural and cultural value, listed by the Council for the Defense of Historical Heritage in 1981.
Throughout the visit, the students were able to learn more about the composition and functioning of the Court, as well as tour its facilities. They also participated in lectures on various topics, covering the history of the TJSP (São Paulo State Court of Justice), the construction of the Palace, the Court's competencies, bodies and collection, and the creation of the Museum. Through the technical visit, the students acquired and deepened essential knowledge for their academic and professional lives.
