The 4th edition of Experience Direito da ESEG College, part of the Etapa Group, brought one of the most current and debated topics in society to the center of discussions: the impact of social media.
With the theme “"Social media in the dock"”, The participants were challenged to experience the legal routine in practice, with critical analysis, argument construction, and oral presentation.
During the event, the students were randomly divided into teams and given an unusual mission: to defend both sides of the same case.
The proposal simulated a trial in which social media networks were sued on charges of manipulating user behavior. In the fictional case, a character named Lívia died, raising questions about the potential impacts of digital platforms on mental health.
Each team had to prepare two speeches: first, accusing the companies; then, defending them. This dynamic allowed participants to develop a broader understanding of the law, practicing argumentation from different perspectives.
Throughout the presentations, the students brought studies, research, and concrete examples to support their points of view. Among the main themes raised were:
On the other hand, arguments were also presented in defense of the platforms, such as the role of algorithms in delivering content aligned with the user's interests.
The presentations also touched upon important reflections on:
More than just an academic exercise, the ESEG's Experience Direito program focuses on bringing high school students closer to legal practice.
This was directly reflected in the participants' perception. Pedro Scalisse, 17 years old and a student of Etapa School, He highlighted: "The event proved very effective in showing how the career works.".
For many participants, the Experience Direito ESEG was their first real contact with the legal world, going beyond the idealized vision portrayed in TV series and movies.
Ana Li, 16, one of the winners of the edition, also shared how the experience changed her perspective. “We think we know what Law is like from watching series, but here I was able to understand how it works in practice. This gave me a lot of motivation and more certainty about my career,” she said.
Maria Helena Toyama de Carvalho, 17, highlighted the event's role in her decision-making. "I'm a very indecisive person, and I came to understand if this was what I wanted. And I realized it is. This experience helped me decide," the student stated.
During the event, students were introduced to one of the key skills in the legal field: oral argumentation. Without the use of slides, participants had to defend their arguments with clarity, confidence, and mastery of the subject matter.
According to Ilana Kalman, 17, this was one of the biggest challenges. “I didn’t know what oral argument was and it was really cool, I had never given a presentation without slides. I really enjoyed working in a team, defending two points of view, which is very cool for understanding better how a legal career works in practice,” said the member of the winning team.
For 17-year-old student Ana Clara Cunha Silva, thinking about both arguments was very interesting: “I enjoyed studying and giving the oral presentation. Now I have even more admiration for the career.”.
Ana Li, 16, highlighted the organization of the event and the support materials provided. “The documents we received for the competition were very helpful, from documentaries to podcasts. This provided a very good foundation that helped to deepen our arguments,” she concluded.
By proposing a debate on a contemporary and complex topic, the 4th edition of Experience Direito reinforces ESEG's commitment to training critical professionals prepared to deal with the challenges of society.
More than debating guilt or innocence, students were encouraged to reflect on responsibility, ethics, and the role of law in an increasingly digital world, in addition to having a practical and immersive experience about the professional career.
