On April 11th, ESEG – Faculdade do Grupo Etapa, in partnership with IEST Group and the Confucius Institute, held a lecture on diplomatic relations between Brazil and China so that students could learn more about the operations and employment opportunities of Chinese companies in Brazil.
Professor Dimas Alberto Ferreira, academic director of ESEG, opened the event and welcomed the speakers Luis Antonio Paulino, director of the Confucius Institute at Unesp and researcher at the Institute of Latin American Studies at Hubei University (China), and Reinaldo Ma, partner at IEST Group, specializing in business consulting with an emphasis on business between China and Brazil.
To provide context for the students, Luis gave a panoramic history lesson, covering the most important moments between the two countries, and highlighted that China has been Brazil's largest trading partner since 2009.
The researcher recounted how the first decisive relations began during the government of Jânio Quadros, when Vice President João Goulart visited China after the Independent Foreign Policy (PEI) began to be implemented in 1961. After a period of interruption, diplomatic relations between Brazil and China were re-established in 1974, during the government of President Ernesto Geisel, until reaching the current scenario with the return of bilateral relations between the countries with the visit of the current president of Brazil in April 2023. The director of the Confucius Institute also presented a table with imported and exported products that favor this relationship, and showed his projections for the future.
Reinaldo emphasized to the students the importance of the cultural aspect in the hiring processes of Chinese companies, as well as the influence of concepts such as "guanxi" (network) and "mianzi" (moral status) in the evaluation of each individual.
“"Although English is the dominant language, speaking the country's language is essential, especially for those who intend to move to China in the future," the executive emphasized.
Lana Ribeiro Kamugawa, an Economics student, was one of the participants in the lecture and considered the initiative fundamental for young people who wish to start their careers in this market. Currently, she works at ICBC bank and has direct contact with several Chinese professionals. Therefore, she decided to share a valuable tip for those who want to work for a Chinese company: “For those who want to work in these companies, my advice is to work hard and dedicate yourself 100%! They (the Chinese) don't like half-hearted work and want very detailed results. It's not easy, but it's an experience we acquire over time and it enriches our careers,” the enthusiastic student said.
To conclude the meeting, Reinaldo invited those present to participate in the 6th edition of the Chinese Companies Recruitment Fair, which took place at ESEG last Saturday (April 13th), and also opened a question and answer session to clarify any doubts from those present.
