The speakers brought different perspectives on how educators can deal with frequent behavioral changes and guide students toward successful careers.

On June 12th, the 9th edition of the ESEG Management Award was launched. This competition aims to disseminate best practices in management and project development among students of the Technical Schools (Etecs) and, starting in 2018, also the Technology Colleges (Fatecs) of São Paulo, both administered by the Centro Paula Souza (CPS).

During the event, teachers and coordinators from both educational institutions attended lectures by four experts and were able to reflect on the impacts of digital transformation on society and, especially, how these changes influence student learning.

Check out the highlights of each presentation below:

Presented by Renato Manzano, a professor of branding and business strategy, the lecture “The Ecology of Relationships – Problem Solving and Skills Development for a Changing World” highlighted the connections that human beings need to establish with other beings and with the environment in order to evolve collectively. The professor emphasized that the concept of ecology is not a metaphor and, to explain it, used the example of applying this idea to the field of education. “It is not enough for the student to master technology; they also need to learn to work in teams and to live in society so that the social gains are more significant,” Manzano stressed.

Fernando Jardim, a sociology professor at the School of Engineering and Management – ESEG, offered a reflection on "How to make decisions in a world flirting with chaos" across all sectors of society. In the field of education, for example, the professor commented on schools that have difficulty identifying people's motivations for development, and therefore cannot offer adequate solutions to the problem. "Teachers need to be closer to students to understand each individual's motivating factors and, in this way, enhance their skills," Jardim suggested.

Pedro Ivo Ferraz da Silva, who was also one of the speakers at the event, spoke about "Innovation in the Knowledge Society Era," based on his experience as a Brazilian diplomat – he currently resides in India. Based on his studies, the State plays an important role as a funder of research and development of new technologies, in an economic model based on knowledge. In Brazil, most patent applications originate from foreign private companies. For the diplomat, the solution for the country to move forward again is to invest in education and curriculum modernization so that, from an early age, students have the opportunity to learn about and become interested in subjects that lead them to a successful career in engineering or natural sciences, for example.

At the end of the event, Jairo Martins da Silva, executive president of the National Quality Foundation (FNQ), presented the lecture “Management for Transformation: Agenda in Scenarios of Exponential Change.” “Companies need to be attentive to trends to avoid crises caused by changes in consumption patterns. Anticipating scenarios is a skill that requires executives to have good management of organizational processes, so this competence should be developed during college,” he opined. According to him, career planning is another topic that should be considered from the beginning of professional life, especially because of the impacts of the so-called fourth industrial revolution.
