ESEG students receive Yellow Belt – 6 Sigma certificates.
Five students from the Production Engineering course at the School of Engineering and Management – ESEG, received the “Yellow Belt – 6 Sigma” certification for their performance in the “Production Maintenance and Improvement” course, held during the second semester of 2017.
On March 19th, Victoria Santana, Victor Vasconcelos, Fernando Souza Rodrigues, Giovanni Rubi Cintra, and Giovanna Brotto Nabahan received their certificates from Professor Leila Keiko Canegusuco, who teaches the course.
“Certification is important for engineers because it indicates solid knowledge in the area of quality within companies. The Yellow Belt is a great differentiator for the resume and career of those who are just starting out in the job market, since it is a methodology widely used in leading national and international companies,” explains Canegusuco.
“After certification, the management of the Customer Service sector at Honeywell Automotive Industry, the company where I work, recommended me to participate in the Green Belt course. This represents a very good opportunity for my career; it's the possibility of presenting a strategic project to the company,” celebrates student Giovanna Brotto Nabahan.
ESEG has offered the "Yellow Belt - 6 Sigma" certification since the first semester of 2017, when students Taís Mayumi Ohtani and Beatriz Tiemy Ohtani were certified.
Six Sigma is the most current methodology in the field of Quality and Business Management, establishing the continuous improvement of production or administrative processes with the goal of reducing variability and, consequently, achieving a very high standard of quality, that is, something close to 3.4 defects per 1 million units produced or services performed.
This methodology originated in the 1980s at Motorola, and was subsequently introduced in companies such as GE, IBM, GM, and others.
Professionals with Six Sigma certification receive titles similar to those in martial arts (White Belt, Yellow Belt, Green Belt, Black Belt, among others) that indicate their levels of knowledge of company processes, initiative, communication skills, and teamwork. Today, the methodology is widely used by both companies that manufacture products and those that offer services.
