Text interpretation for college entrance exams: tips for practice

Text interpretation is an essential skill for doing well on college entrance exams and the ENEM (Brazilian National High School Exam). Correctly understanding what is being asked in the questions can make all the difference in achieving a great result. Want to know how to improve this skill and prepare for the exams? Check out our practical tips!

How can I practice reading comprehension for the college entrance exam?

1. Read the text slowly and carefully.

When reading a text for the first time, do so calmly and without interruptions. Even if doubts arise during reading, continue to the end to grasp the overall context. Many details become clearer as you progress through the text. In exams, this helps avoid wasting time rereading unnecessarily.

2. Develop the habit of asking questions.

When reading a text, ask yourself some questions, such as:

  • What is the author's objective?
  • What information is central and what information is secondary?
  • Why was the information made available in this way?

This helps to create a critical reasoning and to understand the text on a deeper level. When reading a news report, for example, question why the author chose that title or specific data. This helps to understand the subtext and to do a more analytical reading.

3. Practice critical reading.

Critical reading goes beyond simply decoding the message; it involves reflecting on the text's structure, word choice, and the author's intention. In college entrance exams, this skill is useful for answering questions that require in-depth content analysis.

Extra tip: Read editorials and opinion pieces. They are great for practicing the skill of discerning arguments, data, and opinions.

4. Identify unfamiliar words.

While reading, highlight terms or expressions you don't know and then look up their meanings. This is important not only to improve your comprehension but also to enrich your vocabulary—which will be useful for both interpretation and writing. essay.

5. Create summaries after reading.

After reading a text, summarize its content in your own words. This strategy improves your comprehension and also helps to solidify the main ideas and organize them logically.

Practical example: If you read a news article about politics, try explaining the main points to someone in just two or three sentences. This exercise reinforces your understanding of the text.

6. Take practice tests with a limited time.

Practicing with past exams is an excellent way to prepare, but a key factor is respecting the time limit. This way, you simulate the real pressure of the exam and improve your ability to interpret questions quickly.

Separate past ENEM or university entrance exams and take practice tests, timing yourself. Try to complete the interpretation questions without exceeding the allotted time.

7. Focus on transition words.

In many questions, transitional words, such as "however," "on the other hand," or "therefore," signal changes in ideas and conclusions. Identifying them helps to understand the direction of the argument.

In an opinion piece, for example, transition words indicate changes in tone or argument. Knowing how to distinguish them from the rest of the content improves your ability to predict what the author will argue.

8. Learn to differentiate between fact and opinion.

In many college entrance exams, especially the ENEM (Brazilian National High School Exam), there are questions that explore the difference between facts and opinions. Knowing how to distinguish between them is important to avoid misinterpretations. Use a simple technique: mark facts and opinions with different colors while studying. Facts can be proven; opinions reflect a subjective point of view.

9. Compare different texts on the same topic.

Reading two or more texts that address the same topic from different perspectives helps to train the ability to interpret divergent opinions and to identify language biases.

To practice, read one article for and one against a controversial topic, such as global warming, and try to compare the arguments presented. This will hone your ability to interpret neutrally.

10. Solve past exams.

As we mentioned earlier, one of the most effective ways to practice reading comprehension is to solve questions from past exams. The Ministry of Education makes past ENEM exams available on its website. And many universities do the same. This helps you become familiar with the structure of the questions and the style of language used.

How to manage interpretation on exam day?

  • Relax before you begin: Take a deep breath and organize your thoughts before you start reading. This helps reduce anxiety.
  • Highlight key information: Read the question before reading the text, so you'll know what to look for.
  • Divide your time: Allocate time for each part of the exam, prioritizing longer texts, but without rushing through the interpretation.

Now that you're equipped with these tips to improve your reading comprehension for the college entrance exam, it's time to put them into practice. Early preparation is your best ally.
