First-semester daytime law students at ESEG College participated in a mock trial focused on a homicide case. The activity, which represented the class's first practical jury trial exercise, involved fundamental themes studied throughout the semester in the subjects of Criminology and General Theory of Criminal Law.<\/p>\n
In the simulation, the possibilities of intentional and unintentional homicide were analyzed. To do this, the students focused on concepts such as action and omission, causal link, omission causality, result, intent, and typicality \u2013 all previously covered in the classroom. These legal foundations were essential for formulating the prosecution and defense arguments, directly influencing the outcome of the simulated trial.<\/span><\/p>\n The case chosen for the simulation was specially designed by the supervising professor, based on the content covered during the semester, in order to provide an immediate practical application of the theoretical knowledge acquired. The students themselves were able to choose the roles they would play, which ensured greater engagement and a sense of responsibility in conducting the activity.<\/p>\n According to Professor Amanda Scalisse Silva, the experience aimed to broaden students' understanding of the different roles within the criminal process. "It was the first time they participated in a mock trial. The idea is that, in future activities, they will switch roles to develop various technical skills and understand the dynamics from different perspectives," she explains.<\/p>\n This initiative is part of ESEG's pedagogical proposal to offer a solid education connected to the real demands of the profession. "The inclusion of practical activities from the first semester is essential. It allows students to realize, from the beginning, that basic concepts are often crucial for resolving a conflict. Furthermore, it stimulates critical thinking, legal logic, and argumentative skills \u2013 fundamental competencies for a legal career," adds the professor.<\/p>\n The students' response was extremely positive. Demonstrating dedication, responsibility, and enthusiasm, the class stood out for the quality of the simulation and their engagement with the project. The activity also reinforced the students' motivation for future practical experiences.<\/p>\n For the next semester, ESEG is already planning new initiatives with active learning methodologies, including integrated practices between law classes and technical visits to public agencies and institutions.
